Kasikornbank to launch Thailand’s first licensed digital asset custodian

Kasikornbank is ready to launch orbix Custodian, Thailand’s first licensed digital asset custodian.
Operations for orbix Custodian are set to start in early 2025 after licensing.

Thailand’s second-largest financial institution by belongings, Kasikornbank (KBank), is ready to launch orbix Custodian, the nation’s inaugural licensed digital asset custodian, which might be supervised by the Securities and Alternate Fee (SEC).

Notably, the announcement comes two weeks after the license was issued on September 13, with operations anticipated to begin in early 2025. The license was issued by the Ministry of Finance.

KBank’s President, Pipit Aneaknithi, in a press release issued by the financial institution emphasised that the introduction of the custody service marks a pivotal second for the digital monetary infrastructure in Thailand. “This may lay a powerful basis for additional improvement of digital monetary infrastructure, selling Thailand as a digital economic system hub and advancing the nation’s digital business, in response to authorities coverage to accommodate future modifications within the monetary sector,” he said.

The launch of orbix Custodian follows a sequence of strategic strikes by KBank to boost its presence within the digital asset sector. The custodian is owned via its digital-focused subsidiary, Unita Capital, which additionally encompasses orbix Make investments and orbix Expertise.

Notably, orbix Commerce, a cryptocurrency alternate beforehand referred to as Satang, was acquired by Unita Capital in October 2023.

In early September, orbix Expertise launched the Q-Bond undertaking, issuing bonds price 500 million baht ($15.4 million) on the Quarix blockchain. These bonds include a one-year maturity and a hard and fast rate of interest of two.38%, in partnership with the state-owned oil and fuel firm PTT.

Along with its digital asset initiatives, KBank is making strides in synthetic intelligence. Its subsidiary, Kasikorn Enterprise Expertise Group (KBTC), has partnered with AI Singapore and Google Analysis on Undertaking SEALD (Southeast Asian Languages in One Community Knowledge).

Launched in March, this undertaking goals to develop giant language fashions (LLMs) in a number of Southeast Asian languages, together with Thai, Indonesian, Tamil, Filipino, and Burmese, additional highlighting KBank’s dedication to technological development within the area.
